07. Denthanus's Fort

You camp for the evening without incident, and Caex leads you back to the fork in the road. Spots of blood are still evident on the ground, but the bodies you had left behind appear to have been dragged away by large forest animals.

Caex sniffs at the road to get her bearings, and then takes you down the right fork.

You walk along the path for about 6 hours, before you finally start to see the towers of the fort appearing from above the trees. The krenshar stops and looks up at you, as if asking what you would like to do next.

"Hmmm, perhaps someone should go scout ahead to get an idea of what to expect..."

"I suppose that should be me. Unless the snack wants to chase his chicken around the enemy? Yehehehe!"

Gyrax nods. "Yes. I can't really fly very well myself, otherwise I'd give you an aerial report. Plus this armor's pretty loud." she explains, and does a little jingly dance for emphasis that lasts much longer than necessary, as she seems to entertain herself that way. "But you gotta have a way to signal us if you get into trouble. I'll come rushing, I promise! I'll even discard my armor and shield if I have to!" she offers, looking fierce and heroic-like.

"Speaking of which, I have a few ideas that might help with all of your clumsiness." He grins wickedly. "But that can wait until I return." He fades into the shadows and heads toward the fort, planning on skirting the edges and searching for an inconspicuous way in. Perhaps a privy hole or a servant's entrance that is lightly guarded.

Gyrax watches Silk go with an obvious show of affection, admiration, and trepidation. "You think he'll be alright, guys? I mean, sure, he's Silk, and he's awesome and all... but do you think we should have gone with him? I could have... I dunno... stuffed my armor with straw to muffle the sound. But maybe they have fire attacks! Besides, I'd look like a scarecrow, and they kinda scare me for some reason."

As she babbles, Gyrax narroweyes to try to get a fix of Silk's current position, but he's far too talented for her perception.

Cyrus gently pats her shoulder. "Honestly, I think for this task, it would be best if he were alone. He is practically a master of stealth. We'd be a burden more or less."

You do see a small side door, presumably used by the guards outside the gates. However, your path wasn't as sneaky as you thought it would be, and the guards, while they have not seen you, are now on alert.

OOC: Do I have to do roll anything to get back? Also, any other details about the fort that I pick up?

GUARD 1: Dude, did you hear that?

GUARD 2: It is common academic lore that snakes are practically deaf, and by inevitable conclusion, so are us Yuan Ti. So the real question is, are you pitifully ignorant, or grossly rude? You will find I am generous when I decide to assume the former.

GUARD 1: Shut up, I'm trying to listen! Gods-damn it. I swear, it's like having guard duty with a blind beholder, only twice as smug and half as useful.

GUARD 2: I heard that!

Guard 2: Sounded like a gnoll assassin failing at stealthing.

Guard 1: You know, I don't think stealth can be used as a verb.

Guard 2: You can go do whatever you want, I'm staying right here. The boss has been riding my ass all day-

Guard 1: You know, as Yuan-Ti, we don't have asses either since we lack legs.

Gyrax perches on the low branch of a nearby tree, straining to hear the faintest sound of trouble. Despite her concerns, she does prove to grow bored easily, so it's not long before she tries to strike up a conversation. "So what will you do to celebrate when you get your skin back, Sir Cyrus? Get a tattoo? Piercing? Grow a mustache? You are male, aren't you? I knew I should have gotten around to asking these past few days."

"Actually, it's funny you mention that, because I've actually put some thought into it." he sighed softly, resting a hand on his hip. "I am going to eat so much food and bed so many women. Not in that order."

Gyrax nodnods! "It will be my pleasure to take you out for dinner and wenching, Sir Cyrus. There's a nice little place in Unicornistan where they serve spicy lentils with venison sausage... I mean, it's really so much better than it sounds!"

"I'll... take your word for it."

Silk:

Roll another stealth to get away without further alerting the guards, please.

As for other details about the castle, it is composed of a smooth gray rock, with a heavy wooden gate. It would be impossible to scale.

"...so I was thinking about what could be a good name for our team. We can't just rely on the Flaming Sword name. What if we go freelance after this? No, we need our own brand name. First I thought of 'The Siblinghood of Sol'. But I dunno. What if Master Pelor finds it too pandering? So I thought maybe something shorter and more dramatic, like 'We are Menagerie!' You know, play on the eclectic aspect of the group, but then we'd just sound like a touring band of bards from the 3970s. That, and you cannot just refer to yourself in the first person. You can't say 'Oh, I'm a menagerie'. It makes no sense. So now I'm kinda teetering between 'Thralls to the Tentacle of Justice' or 'Partycles'. Sure, the first one is scarier, but don't you think it makes it sound like we're trying too hard? Whoa! Master Silk! How long have you been standing in front of me?"

"I always considered us a bit of a chimera to be honest. Yehehehe!" He winks at Gyrax and turns to the rest of the group. "I believe I have found a way in. And perhaps now is the time to explain my idea..."
